Laser Prostate Surgery

Green light laser prostate surgery is a newer solution for men suffering from an enlarged prostate and offers some advantages over other prostate treatments but is not without some potential risks and side effects.

Wearing a catheter is uncomfortable and irritating. One has a sensation of always having to "go". It is like having a bladder spasm 24/7. One should take the medication that is prescribed by the physician. I was prescribed Detrol to treat an overactive bladder; Levaquin to treat a variety of bacterial infections; and Phenazopyridine [also called Pyridium] to relieve pain, burning and discomfort of the urinary tract.

However, after three months, the flow of urine began to decrease and it was more difficult to go. This continued for about two weeks into April 2006. My first operation was on December 29, 2005. I began to feel very depressed about my situation and my sex life took a turn for the worse. Finally, I returned to my urologist for an examination. At that time the nurse tried to insert the cystoscope into my urethra [penis head] and she could not get it to go in.

This scarring reduced the size of the opening from my bladder; hence my urine flow was restricted. Dr. Lee explained the problem to me on the operating table during this examination. Moreover, I was able to see the problem on the monitor. Amazing!

Only patients who have a perfect anastomosis (reconnection between the bladder and urethra after prostatectomy) are suitable for this technique. More than 80 per cent of patients will be suitable and able to leave hospital without a catheter.

It was in 1996 that Laser Prostrate Surgery was approved by the FDA to vaporize the tissues that were blocking the prostrate. In this method, the doctor transmits laser fiber through the urethra right into the prostrate with the help of a cystoscope and passes numerous energy bursts of around half a minute to one minute duration. These rays demolish the prostrate tissue causing the prostrate to shrivel in size.

My diagnosis was, "Anatomic obstruction of the prostate" or I had an enlarged prostate, which was interfering with my urine flow. The doctor suggested that I try a medication program before considering surgery. Well, "Flowmax" did not work for me as I had a reaction to the drug. Plus, I was concerned about the long-term effects of the drug on my body.

Removing moles usually requires a doctor to cut the mole at the base with a sharp scalpel. The mole is removed from the skin in this outpatient procedure, only a few stitches are required. Removing moles in this manner causes scarring so it was passed over some 20 years ago when laser removal was adapted for dermatology.
